In recent decades, cremation has grown in popularity. In fact, according to the NFDA, the rate of cremation has already surpassed burial and will continue to do so. Due to this growing popularity, our funeral home is proud to offer cremation services in Pittsburgh, PA.

With cremation you have all the choices you have with traditional burial. Our fees for cremation services are determined by the needs of the family and their choice of options. In general, cremation services are relatively inexpensive and affordable to all.

 

The fees for most of the services we offer are discounted in CREMATION PACKAGES and are displayed in our General Price List.

What is Cremation?

Cremation is when the deceased’s body is placed in a cremation container and then incinerated, leaving ashes behind. Families then receive their loved one’s ashes and can choose to bury, scatter, or keep them. Typically, the ashes are held in a container such as an urn. 

Why Choose Cremation?

There are several reasons why you may choose a cremation service. Some reasons include religious or personal beliefs, desire to be more environmentally friendly, and the cost. Although cremations services typically cost less than burial services, that shouldn’t be a sole deciding factor. You should choose whatever funeral service type is right for you and your loved ones.

 

A memorial service is similar to a funeral service and celebration of life ceremony, but serves a slightly different purpose. It doesn’t include a visitation and is held after the funeral, often on significant days such as: 

 

  • A loved one’s birthday 
  • The anniversary of a loved one’s passing 
  • Holidays such as Valentine’s Day 

You can hold your memorial service in a funeral home, church, or significant location such as their gravesite, memorial location, or one of their favorite places. 


You can use the memorial service as a time to share more memories of your loved one and to gather with friends and family. Use it as a time to reflect on your loss and to connect with those you love. Just because you already had a funeral or celebration of life service, doesn’t mean you can’t continue to gather to honor their life. Memorial services can be held at any point in your grief journey and often take place well after the deceased is buried or cremated.

 

 

Cremation Service Types

Not only can you have a visitation and funeral service with cremation, we strongly encourage you to do so. Every life deserves to be remembered, and a service gives family and friends the opportunity to honor their loved one’s life and begin their grief journey. 

Cremation services can take place before or after the cremation, and you also can choose to hold a visitation before the cremation occurs. 

There are several cremation service types you can choose from, including: 

  • Service with a visitation before the cremation takes place. The deceased’s body will be embalmed and prepared for viewing. Guests will get to view the body and have a funeral service, and the body will be cremated afterwards.
  • Direct cremation. With this option, the deceased’s body is cremated immediately after the death without a viewing first.
  • Cremation with a service. The deceased is cremated right away and then a funeral service is held after. 
  • Cremation with a graveside service. The deceased is cremated right away and then a funeral service is held at their gravesite afterwards.
  • Cremation with a celebration of life service. Like the other options, the deceased is cremated right away. Celebration of life services typically take place after the funeral and are more personalized than a traditional funeral. They also can take place outside of the funeral home.

 

Cremation Service Personalization Types

Depending on your desired final disposition, there are several ways to personalize cremation services, including: 

 

  • Having a graveside service before the burial of your loved one’s cremated remains. This way family and friends can pay their final respects. It’s a time to reflect on the deceased’s life. 
  • Holding a service for scattering your loved one’s ashes in a memorial garden or another meaningful location. Which places were special to your loved one? Where did they visit often? These might be good locations to scatter their ashes. 
  • Placing the cremated remains in multiple urns so everyone can have their loved one’s final resting place close to them. This way each individual can choose whether they want to keep the ashes or scatter them somewhere special.

A Visitation or Gathering

You may have a formal or informal gathering to receive friends at the funeral home or another location. This gives everyone an opportunity to share their concern without disturbing the privacy of the family at home.

 

A Funeral or Memorial Service

Before or after cremation, a service can be held to honor the person who has died [held in the funeral home or other facility]. Favorite musical selections and special speakers are an important choice in planning.

 

Burial Placement

In a mausoleum, burial site, or scattering location are also options along with keeping the ashes at home.

 

Direct/Immediate Cremation Options

The term "direct cremation" refers to a cremation without those services in which the body will be present. It is common for a Memorial Service or Celebration of Life to take place independently of the cremation itself. The urn may or may not be present for such services.)

Traditional Funeral Packages with Cremation

The term "Traditional Funeral Service", when referring to a cremation, mean those services in which the body will be present, just as though there was to be a casket burial. There are many different variations; the deceased may be present in a ceremonial casket for a visitation and a funeral service, followed by the cremation. If the urn is to be buried a graveside service may be scheduled at a later date.

If you choose cremation, we strongly recommend that you hold a memorial service to help you and your loved ones in the healing process.

The fees include professional services, attention to all details including filing of forms with government offices, preparation of newspaper notices if desired and handling of floral tributes if any.

Cash Advance are not included in our fees.  The cash advances that most often occur may include cemetery fees, newspaper fees, clergy costs, flowers, certified copies of the death certificates ($20.00 each).

Other memorial remembrance items may or may not be included depending on the service plan selected. Such items may include a DVD Memorial Tribute, prayer cards, a register book, personalized bookmarks, candles, jewelry, or a crucifix.
